Museum

Near the Holiday village Malye Karely is situated the largest open-air State museum of wooden architecture in Russia.

The Arkhangelsk State Museum of  Wooden Architecture and Folk Arts was founded on the 17th of July, 1964.

The area of 140 hectares allows the Museum to arrange its architectural and landscape exposition: more than 100 monuments of wooden architecture of the 16^th -19^th centuries are situated there. Peculiarities of history and ethnography, original culture and traditions of the Pomor people of the Russian North are reflected in the unique cult constructions (churches, bell-towers, chapels, votal crosses), in different types of Northern Russian peasants’ dwellings, in household constructions and seasonal peasants’ settlements.

 The staff of specialists directed by a well-known Russian architect B.V. Gnedovsky has worked out a plan of general development of the Museum which envisages sectioning of the Museum in accordance with the historic and cultural districts of the Region. At present, there exist four sectors in the architectural and landscape exposition – Kargopolsko-Onezhsky, Mezensky, Dvinskoy, and Pinezhsky.

Nikolskaya (St. Nicolas) Church of 1584 (in the village of Lyavlya) and the rarest church ensemble of three parts of the 18^th century (in the settlement of Nenoksa) also belong to the Museum collection.

The Museum collection has got unique objects of material and spiritual culture of the Russian North.

 Today the Museum offers excursions and educational programmes; traditional folk celebrations in which ”Slavutnitsa” Folklore Theatre takes part; festivals, wedding rituals, bell music concerts. The Museum exposition acquaints visitors with the peasant daily life in the North.    

In 1996, by the RF President’s Order, the Federal State Cultural Institution “The Arkhangelsk State Museum of Wooden Architecture and Folk Arts  “Malye Korely”  is listed as the Russian Federation peoples’  cultural heritage of particular value.
